Principal's Corner - November 2018

Dr. Medina

Hello Emerson Parents and Families,

October was a busy month for many reason, we hosted Mural Fest, Emerson Clean Up Day, Explora Science and Family Fun Night, Emerson's Fall Festival and Halloween Dress Up Day.  October is personally my favorite month because we have fun at Emerson and school is supposed to be fun.  As we move towards November, please be aware that Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on November 19th and 20th (Monday and Tuesday) and Thanksgiving Break will be on November 21st-23rd (Wednesday - Friday).  Parent Teacher Conferences are an important time of the first trimester, as you will meet with your child's teacher to discuss their academic progress thus far and to share concerns and accomplishments.

Emerson strongly encourages all families to take time to read with your children at home, at least for 15-20 minutes per night.  This is a strategy that will help reinforce strong reading skills and establish a time when you can spend with your children at home as you help them become better readers.  Learning doesn't only happen at school, it happens at home and wherever you can spend quality time with your family.  Emerson also encourages its families to volunteer, this can take the form of helping in the Library, front office, your child's classroom, the cafeteria (if you like to help with duty) or after school with the Boys and Girls Club.  If you need help in getting a background check, please stop by the front office for help and support.  Thank you Emerson Parents and  Families, we appreciate you and want to continue to work with you as we move forward this school year.

Thank you parents and families and just know you make a big difference, Go Eagles!

    Staff Spotlight

    Ms. Lopez
Hi, I’m Jocelyn Lopez, and I work in the Emerson STEAM Lab. I help students build, create and  explore.  We have many activities for students to choose from involving a variety of STEAM careers. This is my first year with APS, and I am very fortunate to be a part of the Emerson family. I’m currently a Nursing student at CNM; I like to bring what I learn into the STEAM Lab. I was born in Carlsbad, New Mexico and have been living in Albuquerque since I was eight. My favorite part of my job is watching students’ face light up when they solve a challenge or create something new.

    ---------------------------------------------------Mrs. Baker

Hi, I am Carolyn Baker-Nair. I am the school's science teacher, garden coordinator, and a member of the STEAM lab team. I collaborate with grade levels to create hands-on science lessons that support classroom science curriculum. I have a Master's degree in Environmental Science and 5 years of field experience with environmental management and monitoring in desert ecosystems. While my heart belongs to ecology, I have found a new passion teaching chemistry, engineering, and science across the curriculum. My favorite thing about Emerson is recess! Students go to the science lab to hang out with class pets, help around the classroom, and go out to the garden to water and pull weeds. Emerson is more than a school; it is a community and a family
